Forint has been legal tender of Hungary since its issuing of 1st of August, 1946. The individual parts of the coin series have changed in their material, size or depiction many times. New denominations also have been issued. A new issue is put into circulation if the legend, the coat of arms, the metal content or any other parameter changes.
The smallest denomination of metal coin in circulation was the 2 fillér coin, with the largest one to date being the 200 forint. Between 1946 and 1999, five different fillér denominations were in circulation, including the 2-5-10-20-50 fillér coins. The last of this series, the 50 fillér was legal tender until 30 September 1999. Eight different denominations of forint coins were and are in circulation (1-2-5-10-20-50-100-200). The so-called Kossuth 5 forint were made of silver in 1946 and 1947, along with the 200 forint half-silver coins between 1992-1998. Apart from this, only non-precious metal were and are used for minting the coins.
